Asha was commissioned to sing a Marathi song at the age of 10. The song was called ‘Chala-Chala Nab Bala’. At the age of 16, she married Lata Mangeshkar’s secretary Ganpat Rao despite her family’s opposition. However, the marriage did not last long. She returned to her maternal home with her two children. In 1980, she met Rahul Dev Burman and they married. They lived a happy married life until RD Burman’s death in 1994.

In 1966, she gained popularity by singing a duet for music director RD Burman in the film ‘Tisri Manzil’.
